“My wish is to stay always like this, living quietly in a corner of nature.” ― Claude Monet

The Seasons

An Autumn Leaf

I've waited patiently for you,
So lost among a crowd of green,
A summer tree you haven't seen,
Whose arms have held me safely, too.

In quietude, I've stayed for this—
Your airy touch to make me blush.
My skin reacts, and colors rush,
And I'm immersed in vivid bliss.

How wonderful this time will be;
I'll feel the coolness of your sigh.
It makes me want to leap and fly
Before you've gone away from me.

But I will wait for your goodbye
And mounds of frigid pearly down;
I'll leap and land on winter's gown,
My waiting grave, to grieve and die.

Behind the Verse

We are in mid-fall here in New England, when trees display the beautiful colors of their leaves, each at different stages of transformation. This made me think about what it would be like to be a leaf, anticipating this time of year and reflecting on its eventual end. This thought was the inspiration for my poem.
