“Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.” ― William Wordsworth

Love & Romance

My Belle

Tonight, I wonder with a sigh,
While she's asleep in my embrace,
What I'd have done in years gone by
Had she declined my wooing chase.

Would happiness have left me then?
Would I have missed the love I lost?
Would I have chanced to love again
Or rued the day our pathways crossed?

The answers have remained unknown;
They dwell in dreams as yet untold.
I dread the thought of being alone
Or never having her to hold.

And yet, it’s silly that I dwell
On thoughts of sadness late at night,
For she has been my lovely belle
Since we first met, so life is right.

Behind the Verse

The central idea of this poem is about imagined alternate realities and the fear of loss. With it, I reflect on the “what-ifs” of a failed courtship, ultimately recognizing that such thoughts are pointless. This realization awakens a renewed appreciation for the loving relationship I cherish with my wife.
