“We do not remember days, we remember moments.” ― Cesare Pavese

Potpourri

Mother

A seed is sown,
a spark is seen,
and yet unseen.
In time,
 it multiplies
  unfurls
   expands
    and takes form.
Life moves onward,
in a gentle wash
 of tides
  suspended
   held in silence
    between breaths.
The host
is unaware.
Yet loves
 and nourishes it
  by design.
It is
held safe
 protected
  and cared for.
And then—
the revelation!
And her heart
shouts in triumph!
For she has become
 a vessel of life
  the carrier
   of a treasure.
She has become
 a mother.

Behind the Verse

I was going over several prompts that had been posted on a poetry website, and one in particular caught my attention; it was on motherhood. That prompt was the inspiration for this poem. I was going to compose the poem in the classical style but then felt that free verse would work best in this case. The poem charts life's inevitable expansion—from the moment the seed is planted to that of when the vessel that holds the wonderful treasure becomes aware of the miracle.
