“Seek Jehovah, all you meek ones!” ― Zephaniah 2:3

Enduring Faith

Spiritual Warfare

I bear the scars from battles I have fought;
My knees at times have failed while pressing on.
My will to fight for life had waned to naught;
I felt I lacked the strength to see the dawn.
The fallen one proclaims that I have lost
And laughs at all the errors I have made.
He jeers that I should cede, for I've been tossed,
And no one comes to me to offer aid.
But I recall the mercy God has shown
When I have failed to guard my gated door.
I know that in this war I'm not alone,
And so I wield the sword as angels soar.
The love that God has shown has led the way.
 I'll fight until the end—a vow I'll pay.

Behind the Verse

In this poem, I write about the inner struggle a Christian feels between discouragement and faith. I chose the sonnet form because it allows for a clear progression of thought throughout each stanza.

With the opening stanza, I convey the speaker's suffering and feelings of discouragement. The second stanza introduces the adversary, his taunts, and the temptation to give up. Finally, the last stanza represents a spiritual turning point, when he remembers periods in his life when he was certain he was lost but was given renewed strength to continue. Lastly, the closing couplet reaffirms his commitment to persevere and uphold his vows to God.
