“Seek Jehovah, all you meek ones!” ― Zephaniah 2:3

Enduring Faith

Shepherds

We thank the men who tend the flock
 With quiet, faithful care;
Their words are like a healing balm
That aids the weak with hope and calm
 And lifts them from despair.

They seek no praise nor lofty place
 But choose a servant's way;
With humble hearts they always serve
And gladly spend without reserve;
 It's God whom they obey.

When trials rise and burdens press,
 They help our faith endure;
Their gentle counsel steadies hearts;
They teach us what the Christ imparts,
 Which makes our hope secure.

They trace the path their master walked,
 And joyously they weep;
They follow Christ and his command
As humble men in his right hand;
 With love they guide his sheep.

Behind the Verse

I wrote this poem to express appreciation for the appointed men in the congregation, portraying them not as heroes but as humble and self-sacrificing caretakers who model their lives after Christ. Their lives principally reflect faithful service and obedience to Jehovah, the Sovereign of the universe. The focus is not on authority or status but rather on humility, self-sacrifice, service, compassion, and steadfast faith.

I selected the metaphor of the shepherd because it aptly describes these men who care for the spiritual needs of the “sheep”—the members of the congregation, a people who belong to Jehovah under the care of the great shepherd, Jesus.

With the final stanza's line, “And joyously they weep,” I wanted to convey that they serve with joy even in the face of personal challenges or suffering. It demonstrates their deep appreciation for the opportunity to serve as shepherds under the direction of Jehovah and Jesus.
